Books Selected as Favorites to Launch Reading Instruction

Synopsis
THE AWARD-WINNING COLLABORATORS of the New York Times #1 picture book bestseller Wild About Books are back with a new story that promotes books and reading. Told in Judy Sierra’s inimitable read-aloud rhyme, the narrative chronicles the amazing successes of Sam—thanks to his early love of books. The story ranges from Sam’s infancy, when his mother reads him a picture book (“then another, then another, then another . . . such a perfect, patient mother”), to school age, when he cleverly uses some of his favorite books to rid his town of the rampaging baby giant, Grundaloon. “‘Here’s my secret,’ Sam decreed. ‘Readers win and winners read.’” Marc Brown’s playful pictures joyously complement this fun-to-read, upbeat story.

I read this story to a group of second graders and they loved it. It contains a very positive message and the pictures compliment the happy mood of the book. After I read the book several students came up and asked it they could borrow the book  to look at the pictures and read the book again with their reading partners. It is a great book to kick off the year getting kids excited about reading.

Synopsis
It started the summer of 2002, when the Springfield librarian, Molly McGrew, by mistake drove her bookmobile into the zoo.
In this rollicking rhymed story, Molly introduces birds and beasts to this new something called reading. She finds the perfect book for every animal—tall books for giraffes, tiny ones for crickets. “She even found waterproof books for the otter, who never went swimming without Harry Potter.” In no time at all, Molly has them “forsaking their niches, their nests, and their nooks,” going “wild, simply wild, about wonderful books.” Judy Sierra’s funny animal tale coupled with Marc Brown’s lush, fanciful paintings will have the same effect on young Homo sapiens. Altogether, it’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

I visited a Kindergarten classroom and listened in as the teacher read this book. I loved it as much as the students. The book has a sing-song rhythm making the reading enchanting. The students and I sat with smiles on our faces as the teacher read about all the different animals and the books that they selected specifically for their own needs. This is a great book to demonstrate that readers like different types of books, but we all love to read.
Author: Michael Garland
Synopsis
In this latest picture book by Michael Garland, action-packed artwork showcases a tale of high adventure inspired by the magic of reading and one spectacular teacher.

Zack can't wait for Miss Smith to read out loud again from her incredible book. The first story fills the classroom with dueling pirates and the sound of their clashing swords. The second story transports Zack's class to the shady forest of the Big Bad Wolf. At the end of each spellbinding tale the characters slip quietly back into the book.

But one day Miss Smith is late for school, and the principal takes charge. When he runs away in terror from a fire-breathing dragon, Zack and his classmates set free the rest of the storybook characters and have a morning of high-spirited fun . . . until they notice that the pirates have hoisted their Jolly Roger on the roof of the school!

I read this book every year to demonstrate how readers get engaged in the books they read and actually go in their mind to the places in the book. In this book Miss Smith actually takes her students on an adventure that is so real the students become characters in the story. Take your students on a real adventure to a faraway place.
